Rotary Ambassador

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship

Official Site
Organizer: The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International
Wikipedia: Here. Facebook: Here.

Official Program Objective: "The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors academic year scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country."

Eligibility Criteria: "Applicants must have completed at least two years of university or college course work, or must have a secondary school education and have been employed in a recognized vocation for at least two years when the scholarship begins. All applicants must be citizens of a country in which there is a Rotary club. Applicants must initially apply through a Rotary club located in the area of their legal or permanent residence, or place of fulltime study or employment. Persons with disabilities and members of Rotaract clubs are eligible and encouraged to apply."

Program Duration: One academic year.

Cost: None. You receive a grant of 27 000 USD (or local currency equivalent).

Admission Difficulty: Presumably difficult.

Repeat Participants? Unknown.

The Low-Down: Anyone with a local Rotary Club chapter that participates in the Ambassador program is eligible to apply for this award, and it appears you don't actually have to be a Rotarian (a member of Rotary) to apply for the award. There are over 33 000 Rotary Club chapters worldwide. Although not specific to Asia, the award can be held in Asia (I have personally met an American who was a Rotary Ambassador studying in Hong Kong). Country-specific information pertaining to Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan can be found here.
