Organizer: Youth Cultural Exchange Association and Penta
Official Program Objective: "The Youth Cultural Camps teach you to speak Chinese in the same way you learned your native language - through listening, speaking and doing. In our Youth Cultural Camp, you will have the opportunity to explore Chinese in class and learn the language skills in a variety of activities with local students."
Program Eligibility: Students aged 10-17 with an interest in Taiwan and learning Chinese.
Program Dates:
- July 4 - July 23, 2011
- July 18 - August 6, 2011
- August 1 - August 20, 2011
Cost: 1,800 USD per student. This includes: meals and accommodation at Chang Gung University and Sun Moon Lake, the placement test and course materials, entrance fees and transportation, airport pick-up and drop-off services, three excursions and visits to local attractions, and medical insurance.
Admission Difficulty: Presumably not competitive.
Repeat Participants? Unknown but probably yes.
The Low-Down: This camp appears to be an all-inconclusive summer camp aimed at pre-teens and teenagers. The majority of the program is held at Chung Gung University, Taoyuan, but it includes a 5-day trip to Sun Moon Lake as well as day-trips to Taipei, Yi-Lan and Taichung. In addition to language learning, many other activities (baseball, swimming, scavenger hunt, masquerade ball) comprise the participant schedule. Opportunities may also exist for older teens to work as counselors/guides? (inquire with them about this). For parents interested in enrolling their child in a summer boarding camp in Taiwan, this program seems well worth looking into.
