Official Site
Organizer: Institute of International Education
Official Program Objective: "Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia."
Program Eligibility: Please click here.
Number of Participants: It seems quite a few. "From 2001 to 2009, Freeman-ASIA supported over 4,000 U.S. undergraduates from more than 600 institutions with their study abroad plans in East and Southeast Asia.".
Program Duration: "The proposed length of study in the host country must be a minimum of 8 weeks for a summer term, 10 weeks for a quarter term, and 12 weeks for a semester term."
Cost: None. Grant amounts are:
Summer Award: Up to 3000 USD.
Semester/Quarter Award: Up to 5000 USD.
Academic Year Award: Up to 7000 USD.
Admission Difficulty: Unknown. Financial need is a major criteria.
Application Deadline: February 15, 2011.
Repeat Participants? No.
The Low Down: It seems this grant assumes you have already arranged or are in the process of arranging a study abroad to Asia. The award itself is not a study-abroad program. Eligible destination countries are: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
